Summary on Grant Application Form
We propose the application of modern differential geometric technqiues to nonlinear systems, especially as they occur in the design and control of high temperature industrial processes or in the simulation of the dynamics of a gas production system. We intend to exploit Cartan characteristics for numerical and analytical computations and to derive differential constraints allowing for the construction of special solutions for general systems of differential equations. In this context we aim to develop a generalisation of the integration theory of Darboux and methods for the reduction of partial differential equations to ordinary ones. These mathematical results will lead to considerably enhanced and thus more economical numerical approaches. As a consequence we will gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between the formal theory of differential equations and the theory of exterior differential systems.
