Summary on Grant Application Form
Recent advances in the accuracies of speech recognisers have been obtained by developments in pattern matching algorithms (HMMs, neural networks). These may now be limited by the time-frequency analysis methods employed (Fourier, cepstral, LPC). A new analysis technique, the reassignment method, overcomes the time-frequency limitations of Fourier analysis by using the phase to move each point of the magnitude spectrum to its centre of gravity. It is proposed to evaluate this technique for feature detection (pitch, formants) and for speech and speaker recognition.
