Control of emmissions from industrial burners and optimisation of efficiency is dependant on many factors, including the exact distribution of the fuel in the combustion region. This project will look at three aspects of the particle behaviour which affect the loading distribution: roping, grouping, and the irregular particle shape. Recent successful measurements of the characteristics of air-particle flows will be extended to include non-spherical particles giving a better representation of conditions present in pulverised fuel transport. Slippage roping and grouping will be investigated and the differences between the behaviour of spherical and non-spherical particles will be considered and compared to recent theoretical numerical advances in this area. The effectiveness of devices designed to prevent or break up rope formations will be assessed, by measurements on perspex models. Finally, building on previous experience in half scale isothermal models, and previous combustion measurements, studies of the particle distributions in a full-sclae test burner will be carried out both isothermically and in combustion conditions. Results will be compared with steady-state models of the burner.
