Summary on Grant Application Form
The development of novel, reliable pressure and temperature sensors capable of working in the cylinders of petrol automotive engines is the key to future engine management systems. The business goal is the attainment of high efficiency and reduced emission at low cost. The use of a photonics solution to this problem depends upon the design and microfabrication of a reliable, robust sensor, capable of being produced in batch quantities. RAL/CMF will use its microfabrication expertise and facilities in the design of such systems and in the R&D, optimisation and technology transfer of the essential microfabrication methods. Close collaboration will be necessary with the silicon integrated optics and sensor industry partners and with the end-user automotive company.
