Summary on Grant Application Form
The overall aim is to consolidate the research carried out under EPSRC grant GR/J02209 which has demonstrated time-gated holography as a means of generating depth-resolved images through turbid media, achieving depth/transverse spatial resolutions as good as ~50 um/50um through a scattering medium. Colleges at the Royal Marsden Hospital are interested in applying this technique to screening/monitoring diagnostics for melanoma and other carcenoma but there are important scientific issues which must first be resolved - particularly sensitivity, resolution and image acquisition time. Current limitations result from the physics of the photorefractive holographic recording process and the experimental geometrys used. By studying the underlying physics of the holographic recording in rhodium-doped barium titanate and alternative media, we intend to improve the depth/transverse resolution and the sensitivity. Spectral resolution and tunability would also be addressed. Our collaborators in Spain will provide us with samples of bulk crystal and novel thin film structures and we also intend to investigate the photorefractive potential of (semi-insulating) MQW structures.
