A series of experimental studies of electron impact excitation and/or ionisation of atomic hydrogen and helium will be performed using the electron-photon (e,hv) and electron-electron (e,2e) correlation techniques. These methods give detailed information on the dynamics of the processes. Major advances achieved recently through comparison of our data for single electron excitation in helium with a recent calculation have shown that these processes can now be accurately predicted over a wide energy range. We will probe the limitations of the theory near threshold for D states and attempt to extend the work to F states. We will investigate a major discrepancy between theory and experiment for excitation of H(2p) at intermediate energies.Excitation/ionisation processes involving two electrons are not well understood. We will use the (e,2e) method to study double excitation-autoionisation in helium and the (e,hv) angular correlation technique to measure alignment of the He+(2p) ion following simultaneous excitation and ionisation of the ground state helium atom.
