Summary on Grant Application Form
The first objective will be to demonstrate the viability of catalytic intramolecular alkylation and acylation processes for a range of electron rich and electron poor aromatic and heteroaromatic rings. Pd, Ru, Rh and Ir will be compared for these processes and their strengths and weaknesses assessed. Alternative methods of initiating Pd(O) catalysed processes to circumvent the need for halide or triflate moieties will be sought with the focus on HPdX addition to alkenes and alkynes. Studies with Ru, Rh and Ir catalysts, which are activated by coordinating substituents on the substrate, will focus initially on extending the range, and producing a hierarchy, of ortho-directing groups and exploring the potential of heteroatoms in heteroaromatics for directing substitution at proximal ring sites. Site selectivity in non-symmetrical substrates as a function of ortho-directing groups will be determined and the potential of directing groups attached to longer tethers assessed. Immobilisation of active homogeneous catalysts on glass beads will be carried out. These catalysts and other heterogeneous catalysts will be surveyed against a range of substrate and reaction types and efficiency of water as a solvent assessed.
