In this collaborative project with Hickson Fine Chemicals novel heterogeneous catalysts will be designed, prepared, and evaluated for the enantioselective hydrogenation of substituted pyridines to chiral piperidines. Three types of catalyst will be researched, in each of which a metallic active phase (most probably Pd) will function in the chiral environment provided either by an adsorbed modifier (alkaloid or carbohydrate) or by an optically active support Catalyst optimisation will require a knowledge of the physical properties of the catalysts, the manner in which they adsorb modifiers and reactants, the interaction of modifier with reactant, and the mechanisms of hydrogenation. Successful reactions which have been optimised with respect to enantiomeric excess in the Hull laboratory will be scaled-up at Hickson's within the grant programme. The Comapny will consider adding chiral piperidines to its product range as a result of this research.
