Summary on Grant Application Form
1. Test the use of liquid N2O4 in the presence of excess O2 (as an alternative to N2O5) to produce nitrates of metals in their highest oxidation states, eg Sn(NO3)4, CrO2(NO3)2, UO2(NO3)2 and Mo0(NO3)4:2. Study solutions of these products and also of T1(NO3)4, and VO(NO3) in liquid N2O4 as nitrating agents at or below 20C for toluene, and related compounds, to determine yields, reaction rates and the suitability of these nitrates as intermediates, in the presence of excess O2, in catalytic nitration reactions.3. Investigate the corrosion of various alloys by liquid N2O4 in the presence of HNO3, excess O2 and NO to assist with the design of metal apparatus for nitration reactors and for storage of nitrogen oxides (in space propulsion).
