Summary on Grant Application Form
At present train pathing, timetabling and `track access planning' is done by a process which requires hundreds of train planners, and takes months to generate a feasible train plan. Faster more flexible, more powerful computerised methods are badly needed, especially to find conflicts, and resolve conflicts, both of which are currently done `by hand'. This has been made more urgent by the recent and ongoing reorganisation of British railways (and is needed whether or not the railways are privatised). We propose developing methods, algorithms and computer programmes to help automate the above tasks, and explore the issues and problems involved. In a current research project we have achieved this for large busy single stations/junctions. We propose to: (a) extend this to path trains of different types, speeds, etc on multiple lines between stations; (b) integrate this with our single station models to obtain a system for a congested multi-station network; and (c) test and demonstrate this system.
