The investigation will examine the impact of real and standard fires on building components by a quantification of the heat flux incident on to exposed surfaces during fire tests. In the first instance, heat flux measurements will be provided by a standard Gardon gauge. However, the utility of a steel billet device as an alternative and more robust means of flux measurement will be evaluated as a major part of the investigation. In fire tests, flux measurements will be compared with the more common methods of defining fire severity, that is the standard thermocouple of measuring gas temperature and also the more recently proposed plate thermometer. The investigation will centre on data provided by instrumentation stations designed by the research team and positioned within four major fire tests planned within the Cardington frame programme, together with a short laboratory fire test programme at Ulster.
