Summary on Grant Application Form
Active antennas are now well established as an important outcome of the convergence printed antennas and microwave integrated circuits. They overcome the known problem the incompatible substrate requirements by intimate integration of devices and radiators to form for example microstrip patch oscillators and, mixers. However construction in fully planar technology leads to notable problems such as oscillator instability and unrepeatability and substrate surface waves which both lead to degredations in scanned active arrays using injection locking methods. We propose to investigate how silicon micromachining can be used to overcome these problems by creating a series of technology demonstrators of transmit elements and receive elements and arrays of both. Here the three dimensional mature of macromachining structures coupled with the possibility of the construction of closed circuits with slot radiators is seen to be a major advantage and may well lead to a useful range of new devices.
