Summary on Grant Application Form
This project will involve research in the use of environmentally friendly supported reagent catalysts in the partial oxidation of organic substrates in the liquid phase. The research will be directed towards achieving an understanding of the nature of supported reagents based on chemically modified support materials and addressing the fundamental problems of catalyst stability, deactivation and reactor/separation technology so as to develop new environmentally friendly catalytic technology for the preparation of important chemical products and intermediates via the catalytic oxidation of inexpensive substrates in the liquid phase. Special attention will be given to replacing existing chemical processes that lead to the production of unacceptable levels of toxic waste. The research will involve the preparation of catalysts, the characterisation of catalysts, the application of the catalysts in important oxidation reactions, and studies in the separation of the catalyst and the use of (semi-) continuous processes.
