Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed reseach is the development of a computer system that automatically analyses the syntactic structure of English. We are attempting a new approach that we expect will achieve better results than existing rule-based and stochastic systems. The approach applies the linguistic knowledge extracted from a syntactically analysed one-million-word collection of samples of British English. This knowledge, which takes the form of various syntactic rules, will be employed to analyse new data. The results of the research will be exploited in a large potential market dealing with such urgent tasks as text information retrieval, machine translation, text-to-speech applications, and document summarisation.
