Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed research at Cranfield forms part of an IMI proposal to develop high performance twin-screw extruders. The consortium includes an extruder manufacturer and end-users from a range of processing industries. The project will redesign the extruder to enable the use of shell inserts within a clam-shell barrel. These shells will be manufactured from state-of-the-art materials using powder metallurgy processing to near-net shape. The new barrel concept will be evaluated under laboratory conditions from which the design will be optimised. This will be followed by large scale in-service trials across a wide range of market applications, including food, plastics and chemical processing.
