The measurement of rate constants, the determination of the structure of surface intermediates and the assay of active sites are pervasive problems in both applied and fundamental studies of heterogeneous catalysis. In this proposal we suggest the development of a versatile reactor system employing integrated Frequency Response Methods and Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Spectroscopy to allow measurement of diffusion, rates of adsorption and desorption, rates of both overall catalytic reaction and individual surface reaction steps, the concentration of surface sites for specific reactions and time dependant vibrational spectra of both reversibly and irreversibly adsorbed surface intermediates, all for a series of catalyst systems of immediate and industrial and commercial importance.
