Summary on Grant Application Form
The combination of catalytic reaction with some form of separation, such as membrane or adsorptive separation, can lead to relatively high product yields and/or selectivities, a reduction in the associated downstream processing costs, and process intensification. The proposed research will address the combination of reaction and pressure swing adsorption (PSA), and in particular a rapid-cycle PSA (RPSA) process. When compared to the commercially established PSA processes, RPSA offers process simplicity, ie a single bed of adsorbent with no complex valve sequencing, and higher adsorbent productivities for some bulk gas separations. The process will be utilised as a reactor by replacing the adsorbent bed with an admixture of adsorbent and catalyst, or with zeolite catalysts. As model reactions, experimental consideration will be given to the enhancement of the catalytic dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene, and to the improvement in butene selectivity in the hydrogenation of butadiene. With the aid of theoretical models, operating regions will be explored in which marked improvements over conventional reactors are achieved.
