Summary on Grant Application Form
Soft rock engineering is generally regarded as an area of uncertainty, lying between the more established conventional disciplines of soil mechanics and hard rock mechanics. In extrapolating solutions from conventional soil or rock mechanics, designers tend to err on the side of caution. There is therefore considerable scope for achieving significant savings in cost in the design of retaining walls in soft or weak rock, if the behaviour of these structures can be predicted with more confidence. The two key uncertainties facing the designer of a wall retaining or embedded in soft or weak rock concern the characterisation of the geotechnical properties of the ground, and the way in which these should be incorporated into an appropriate design procedure. The aim of the proposed research is to investigate these issues with reference to field and laboratory tests, finite difference and finite element analyses, and data from at least one case study.
