Investigating diagrammatic representations for expert reasoning in the context of knowledge acquisition (KA), and studying knowledge acquisition using diagrammatic representations, are the primary objectives of the project. Processes underlying experts recall and problem solving with diagrams are confronted in the need to obtain knowledge that is graphical in nature. The principles of diagrammatic KA will be the basis for novel forms of KA, extending existing KA-technology into this neglected area, beyond propositional representations. The objectives will be achieved through five interrelated aims: (a) discovering principles for diagrammatic KA; (b) developing practical diagrammatic techniques; (c) building computer based tools embodying those techniques; (d) conducting preliminary evaluation of the techniques and tools; and, (e) integration of the diagrammatic KA tools with existing propositional KA tools. Representation specific techniques and tools will be developed for two classes of diagrammatic representation, to allow general principles and theory to be addressed by cross representation analyses. Target domains will focus on engineering processes requiring dynamic control. Industrial collaborators will trial the diagrammatic tools in real settings.
