Large arrays of escape-suppressed Ge spectrometers will be used to study aspects of the structure of nuclei at high rotational frequencies. The interplay between single-particle and collective degrees of freedom will be explored through observations of band-crossing phenomena and electromagnetic decay properties in odd-Z and odd-odd deformed nuclei. Of particular interest is the deformation-driving behaviour of high-j neutron and proton orbitals.Radiactive beams at ORNL will be used to measure proton orbit sizes in proton-rich nuclei. The first experiment will use a 17F beam. States of 17F are believed to exhibit a proton halo, a nuclear property which is currently of intense interest. Preparations will be made to exploit the SPIRAL facility.
