Summary on Grant Application Form
This research programme proposes to address two principle areas of investigation (1) An efficient, silica based amplifier I the second telecommunications window broadly around 1.3 um and (2) A high power silica based source for the remote pumping of Er based amplifiers in the third telecommunications window.Use will be made of the cascaded Raman process as the basis of both devices. Although a well established phenomena, a new and novel resonant all fibre patented configuration will be employed. As a result of the resonant structure, high efficiency and large gains can be obtained.Amplification studies will be undertaken at 1.3um where efficient system compatible amplifiers are required for the current upgrade of installed terrestrial optical communications systems. The system will also be used as a pump source for the remote pumping of Er amplifiers in repeaterless configurations and should be capable of delivering pump powers of 1W, well in excess of that from current single stripe diode laser devices. Both systems will e fully characterised and examined under high bit rate input signals.
