The project has two primary aims: to build a laboratory-scale x-ray microscope and to use it to solve problems in, eg biology and materials science. We plan to build a scanning transmission microscope, because it is well suited to repetitive laser plasma sources, because it is the type of microscope with which we have most experience and because the constraints on the x-ray optics are less severe than in full-field transmission microscopy. The microscope will be used for detailed studies of a range of specimens, at resolution scales of a few tens of nanometres. Our own major interest is in elemental mapping of, eg calcium and carbon, by absorption-difference imaging. We shall also invite academic and industrial reserachers to use the instrument and to take part in its evaluation; one possible industrial use will be in the inspection of micro- and nano- technological devices.
