Summary on Grant Application Form
The BBC produces radio and television programmes and printed material for schools and home learning; in the future this material could be accessed and tailored by teachers using an on-demand multimedia information service via the Internet. It is obvious that only a distributed multimedia system could provide the required performance and availability for the tens of thousands of potential users of this service. The project will make extensive use of the tools and methods that are being developed for specification, design configuration and management of distributed services at Imperial College. The existing tools will need further development in order to apply them to multimedia applications. The BBC Education on Demand service will be a valuable case study for this research. While the project is aimed at a specific application, it will address more general issues of scalability, availability, replication and heterogeneity during the requirements analysis, specification, design and implementation phases of the underlying support platform which could be applicable to many other multimedia applications. This project will also involve a small company called TECC which currently produces networked multimedia services.
