|
We propose to hold a Research Festival during the summer of 1995. It will gather together a significant group of world-class researchers for an intensive push on research issues identified by the Department. It will be achieved by a refinement of the following mechanisms:+ Individuals and research grouped in the department will bid to invite a visiting researcher for an extended visit of 3-6 weeks during the summer of 1995. We will pay the visitor's travel and accommodation costs, but not salaries.+ If the visitor is eminent, we will also offer to bring one or more of his or her research students or associates. We will also invite a few less experienced visitors with whom we already work well (e.g. ex-PhD students or ex-lecturers).+ We will explore the possibility of having some visitors from industry.+ We will identify one or two prime weeks which visitors will be particularly encouraged to include in their stay, during which we will hold a programme of research talks, social events, demonstrations, and other events. We will publicise these events widely, both within and beyond the University.+ We will accommodate the visitors either in our own offices, or in open-plan offices in our labs in the Boyd Orr, or both. The idea is to encourage a high degree of interaction between people.
