This project is designed to research advanced techniques in laser surface treatment and applications of high brightness fibres. The main areas of activity that will be addressed are laser glue softening, laser scabbling, laser cladding, and percussion laser drilling. Each of these areas will utilise new developments in optics and laser technology through close collaboration with the fibres and laser research groups at Heriot-Watt University. The laser glue softening project will seek to develop a high speed labelling system with the use of compact CO2 diffusion cooled laser technology and new techniques in beam manipulation. Laser induced thermal stress cracking will be investigated with a view to applying the technology to the decommissioning of nuclear plants. New laser cladding technology will be developed with the aid of novel beam configurations made available by the provision of array laser systems presently under development at Heriot-Watt University. The percussion drilling process will be studied with the aid of high brightness fibres produced by the fibres group at Heriot-Watt University. It is thought high brightness fibres could provide more accurate and efficient drilling of high speed turbine blades than at present.
