New nanocrystalline exchange coupled ultra-soft magnetic ferrous alloys, having modified compositions and decreased dc coercivities, compared with the existing commercial nanophase alloy and amorphous Co-based alloys, have recently been demonstrated by one of the applicants. The initial aim now is to undertake a more detailed study of the dc and ac magnetic properties, (and especially the high frequency ac properties) and of the correlations with the phase constitutions and structure to elucidate the reasons for the improvements. The latter will be investigated by high resolution transmission electron microscopy and associated nano-scale analysis of the constituent phases. The alloys, which are initially cast as amorphous ribbon prior to nanocrystallization by annealing, will also be fabricated to monolithic and polymer bonded cores to investigate their high frequency properties. Their potential (in competition with the more expensive Co-based alloy glasses and the existing nanophase Finemet alloy) will be assessed for a wide range of applications, including inverters and current transformers chokes, inductive components and, especially important, earth leakage protection devices. The microwave absorption characteristics of the new ferrous nanophase alloys in the form of polymer bonded particulate will also be investigated and compared with ferrous amorphous alloy polymer composite.
