Summary on Grant Application Form
Homodeptic P4 - donor and mixed P2 E2 -donor (E = S, NR, O) macrocycles with a range of ring-sizes will be synthesised and fully characterised. The complexes of these ligands with selected metal ions, particularly early transition metals will be investigated and characterised by standard spectroscopic techniques (IR, UV-visible, ESR, multinuclear NMR) and X-ray crystallography. Redox studies will be performed via electrochemical methods. Organometallic (e.g. alkyl, hydride etc.) derivatives will also be synthesised and their chemistry studied in detail. Parallel studies will be undertaken on synthesis and characterisation of metallocyclic derivatives using acyclic P2Ex ligands (E = S, NR). The properties of these products, e.g. for up take of additional ions into the cavity, will also be investigated.
