Halogenated-organics are a global environmental concern and environmental groups have called for a ban on use of chlorine, including for water treatment. Research published over the last 10 years has identified an increasing number of potential natural sources for these compounds. Isotopic fingerprinting is an ideal method for determining the source and flux of contaminants, and the proposed research will aim to demonstrate that isotopic measurement can be employed to determine natural sources of low molecular weight halogenated organics in the environment. This research proposal will produce the first base-line study of d13 of halomethanes with source, will measure d37C1 on a limited number samples of known sources and with AMS-14C will estimate the mass balance of natural and anthropogenic halomethane. A successful demonstration of the feasibility of this approach in calculating halomethane fluxes will be of global importance.
