We propose the development of a mathematical model for scar formation. The model will build on recent experimental advances, which have clarified the biochemical differences that cause wounds in foetal animals to heal perfectly, while adult wounds scar. These biological advances imply that the model must contain features leading to novel mathematics, in particular the existence of a contuous range of healed states. It is this novel mathematics that provides the central motivation for the research. We will study the model both analytically and numerically, leading to formulae for the speed of healing and the final healed state, as a function of biological parameters. In particular, model predictions will confirm and extend experimental results on the reduction of scarring by chemical intervention. We will go on to consider the effect of wound shape on scarring and speed of healing, and the way in which the shape changes during the healing process. These mathematical conclusions will translate into practical ways of reducing scarring following trauma or surgery.
