Summary on Grant Application Form
Stability limits on the National Grid System, and other power systems around the world, are known to cause significant constraint costs on the system operation. This is of considerable concern to the electrical power industry. Computer based studies that analyse security can identify whether individual contingencies will lead to system instability, but it is necessary to use the experience and expertise of engineers to interactively modify the pattern of generation to achieve acceptably secure operation. This research will develop algorithms that will automatically identify which generators are contributing to a given security problem and in what proportion. In addition algorithms that provide solutions in terms of the creation of constraint groups and identification of transfer limits across constraint group boundaries will be developed.
