We propose to investigate a novel method for stabilising self-assembled lyotropic liquid crystalline phases. We will make ternary mixtures of an amphiphile, water and a polymerisable hydrophobic molecule. The later will be synthesised so that it contains three polymerisable groups, so that it can form highly connected polymer nets. Current evidence indicates that if the hydrophobe is rather long chained, but flexibile it will pack between amphiphilic monolayers and alter the lyotropic structure in a predictable way. When polymerised the net should stabilise the structure whilst retaining the fluid interface of the original mesophase.
