Summary on Grant Application Form
Highly fluorinated organic liquids are immiscible, at room temperature, with inorganic and organic solvents; mixing these fluids gives a two-phase mixture called the 'fluorous biphase'. A fluorous biphasic approach to homogeneous catalysis offers advantages in catalyst recovery and mass transfer effects over conventional, single-phase, systems. Catalysts can be made fluorous phase soluble by functionalisation with long perfluoralkyl pony tails . This research programme seeks to estalbish the general applicability of this approach by preparing fluourous phase soluble complexes which are direct analogues of established catalysts and investigating the solvent stability and the catalytic activity of these species in the fluorous biphase under standard industrial condition.
