The aims of this project are: 1) To produce new inverse polymer dispersed liquid crystal devices and to evaluate these in comparison with conventional materials and devices; 2) to synthesise and establish structure property correlations of novel organosiloxane liquid crystals that have fast (at room temperature)electro-optic responses normally associated with very low molar mass fluid materials, yet also have the ruggedness of polymeric systems in their smetic phases and also exhibit 100C wide nematic phases; 3) to optimise the behaviour of these materials in photo-etched or cross-linked confined geometries and thereby produce laminated glass or flexible polymer films; 4) to evolve commercially applicable materials and device configurations, with the industrial collaborators, based on the fundamental science of the programme, and 5) to train researchers capable of extending this work to the production and development of the materials and devices in an industrial environment. The two main industrial collaborations are proposed in the synthetic area with Merck (UK) and Dow-Corning (UK) and for the later exploitation stages with a number of electronics companies including Toshiba (UK) and Philips. Through a carefully managed programme it is hoped to exploit this work to the benefit of the partners and the UK industrial base.
