Semiconducting carbon is an attractive material for thin film cathodes for field emission displays because it has a low electron affinity, is chemically inert and can be produced as large are thin films using various room temperature plasma deposition processes. Electron emission from various forms of sp3 bonded amorphous carbon will be measured. The a-C(:H) films will be deposited by filtered cathodic arc, plasma beam source and plasma deposition methods. The a-C(:H) will be optimised by studying the emission and its stability as a function of the sp3 bonding fraction, band gap, H content, n-doping and surface roughness. The surface micro-roughness can be controlled in filtered arc deposition, and the emission enhancement by roughness will be studied microscopically using a combined AFM/STM. Electronic surface calculations and modelling will be carried out to determine the effect of the surface states, bulk gap states, doping, and surface chemistry (oxygen and hydrogen) on emission and electron transport. The effect of surface poisoning will also be examined to determine the need for gettering.
