Summary on Grant Application Form
The Infra-Red Image Furnace at Warwick is being used to produce high quality single crystals of the high temperature superconductors and other related oxides using the floating zone method. The crystals produced by this method are superior in quality to those produced by other more conventional routes. Crystals grown by us using the furnace include, Bi2Sr2CaCu208 (of several stoichiometries) La2-xSrxMO4(M=Ni, Co and Cu), Babi03, Bi2Cu04. During the period of the grant, we propose to continue the growth of the superconductors whilst also pursuing the growth of new and novel materials not previously tried by this route. For example, we intend to grow crystals of some magnetic oxides related to the superconductors that are of interest and for which there is a demand among the users. The crystals grown will not only be used in our in-house and collaborative experiments, but will also be freely available to the UK user community, especially the Bi-2212 crystals which have been in great demand. We hope that with acquisition of an improved design IR Furnace we will be able to produce larger crystals as well as substrates for thin film growers.
