Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed research seeks to increase the productivity of parallel programmes by developing a repertoire of coordination forms which can be used to organise the parallel execution of program components written conventionally. A framework for this methodology will be developed to provide a generic structured coordination language which can be applied to any base imperative language. This approach allows not only high-level specification of the parallel structure of an application, but also facilitates efficient execution and portability. The framework allows very high-level, application-oriented coordination forms to be developed. This capability will be tested in a realistic manner by exploring two relevant areas; adaptive mesh refinement and numerical optimisation and decision support in collaboration with groups working in these areas and Fujitsu Systems (Europe) Ltd.
