Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal is being made for a 6 month extension to grant GR/H18050. A main purpose of this grant was to measure residual stress distributions non- destructively by neutron diffraction using the neutron sources at the ILL Grenoble and ISIS Rutherford. For most of the period of the grant the ILL has been shut down and it has only just restarted. Substitute sources have been used at the LLB Saclay, JRC Petten and LANSCE at Los Alamos but the instruments at these facilities were not optimised for strain scanning. Consequently modification and calibration of the instruments was needed and it has not been possible to make all the neutron diffraction measurements envisaged. An extension of 6 months is requested to allow measurements of residual stress redistribution caused by fatigue loading of shot-peened samples to be completed at the ILL and JRC so that allowance for this redistribution can be incorporated into component lifetime assessment methods.
