Summary on Grant Application Form
The aims of the programme are (1) to research into the preparation, purification, crystal growth and characterisation of metallic materials, (2) to prepare high quality samples of metallic elements, alloys compounds for use in metal physics research. By continuing to supply such samples to around two dozen EPSRC-supported groups at universities and research institutions, we intend to support their world class researches into magnetism (both fundamental and applied), Fermiology, metal surfaces, superconductivity etc. We also plan to update more of our equipment to ultra high vacuum-type standards, to extend our metal purification research to include transition metals and to carry out characterisation studies of as-grown crystals using electron microscopy. Our small team, who have given a long term commitment to this programme, specialise in preparing the types of samples which are not available commercially and several groups are entirely dependent upon us for all of their need; we also see it as part of our role to give information and advice to those groups who are able to undertake some of their own sample preparations.
