Summary on Grant Application Form
We have recently demonstrated a powerful new contactless technique for investigating the electronic properties of quantum dot and quantum wire arrays based on the scattering of SAW pulses. We are seeking funds to set up a collaborative project linking an experimental group at the University of Bath and a theory group at the University of Exeter. We propose to extend the capabilities of an existing high precision measurement system and use it to perform comprehensive investigations of scattering from nanostructure arrays with various aspect ratios. Systematic studies will be made of wire/dot arrays as a function of carrier concentration in magnetic fields of arbitrary orientation. At the same time a quantitative theoretical description of the complex dielectric response of the experimental system will be developed including electron interactions and phonons as well as the influence of the array and possible collective effects.
