Summary on Grant Application Form
Measurements of the Mossbauer spectra of tin in glasses will be made, using both conventional transmission Mossbauer spectroscopy and conversion electron Mossbauer spectroscopy (CEMS). The materials to be studied are industrially produced float glasses, coated float glass and laboratory synthesised tin-containing glasses. The spectra will yield data on the oxidation state of the tin (from the isomer shift), the local structure of its ligands (from the quadrupole splitting) and the binding strength (from the temperature variation of the f-factor and the second-order Doppler shift). The changes in the spectra produced by thermal treatment and under different atmospheric conditions will be measured in order to investigate the rate and mechanism of oxidation.
