Summary on Grant Application Form
Haldane recently suggested that strongly correlated electron systems may be describable by particles with a `fractional exclusion principle'. It transpired that all models soluble by the Bethe ansatz have this behaviour. We have recently constructed the basis for the first quantisation of these particles. This proposal is for the exploitation of these foundations to explore the roles of disorder and interactions in these systems (as real examples will have such influences). In detail we will: construct a second quantised theory and explore the effects of disorder on the coherence of the Haldane particles; construct the phase diagram at a Hartree Fock level for interacting particles, noting parallels with bose condensation and fermi-surface instabilities as the statistics approach the bose and fermi limits; see if the quasi particles have divergent lifetimes as the energy approaches the chemical potential; construct experimental signatures in terms of excitation spectra and response to external fields.
