Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of this project is to use a separation technique which involves the attachment of air bubbles to different plastic particles using their difference in surface properties. Separation would then be achieved by using a process of enhanced elutriation. The technique has already been shown to work on the bench scale and in this work these fundamental studies would be continued. Following this, trials will be carried out on test mixtures of plastics in a modified, pilot-scale elutriator. At the same time the problems of contamination and pre-treatment of real plastic mixtures will be investigated to assess the likely degree of pre-treatment necessary. In the final part of this project, real plastic mixtures will be obtained, pre-treatment as necessary and separations investigated on the pilot-scale
