Summary on Grant Application Form
A hot stage will be constructed for use with the CRISP neutron reflectometer allowing the study of segregation at liquid metal/solid interfaces in situ during wetting experiments. We will use the anomalous negative scattering length of Ti to investigate its role in promoting the wetting of ceramics by liquid metals. The role of a bridging oxygen will also be investigated during the wetting of Al203 by Cu. Metal/metal interfaces will be studied by evaporating a thin layer of metal onto a sapphire single crystal substrate. Wetting liquid droplets on this new surface can then be probed by neutrons.
