Phase stepping speckle interferometry is an attractive technique for measuring displacements, strins and surface profile, but has two drawbacks: (i) conversion of phase maps to the engineering parameter of interest is difficult (ii) speckle moise degrades SNR by an order ot magnitude compared to conventional interforemeters. IT is proposed to (i) implements a new temporal phase un-wrapping algorithm on a pipeline prrocessor to measure displacement and strain fields in real time (i) investigate the use of a spatial light modulator on the object bean to reduce speckle noise. The research has many potential applications including mechanical testing and shape measurement. In particular, it is proposed to use the instrument together with shearography to automatically detect and guade the severity of defects in carbon fibre composite panels.
