Using selected classes of intermetallic compounds (e.g. Laves phase compounds, ThCr2Si2-related phases and Chevrel phase compounds) as model systems, the research programme outlined in this proposal will address: spin correlations, moment formation and long range magnetic order in spin fluctuating itinerant electron systems (e.g. NbFe2), the nature of the electronic state responsible for superconductivity in Fe-, Co- and Ni-based superconductors (e.g. Lu2Fe3Si5, CeCo2, RNi2B2C) and the coexistence of magnetic and super-conducting ground states in unconventional superconductors (e.g. RNi2B2C, HoMo6Se8). These three issues are at the limits of our current understanding and yet remain fundamental to modern magnetism. The detailed experimental information provided by the magnetisation, susceptibility, resistivity, neutron scattering and muon spin rotation and relaxation will provide a powerful stimulus to theoretical effort in these areas.
