Summary on Grant Application Form
The principle aim of this research is to develop computer software capable of calculating three-dimensional temperature distributions and cooling cycles in materials during welding and surface treatment using continuous and pulsed lasers. The energy absorption in the work-piece is to be calculated using mathematical models based on fundamental understanfing of the laser-material interaction. Once the temperature distribution has been determined information about the metallurgical strength and quality of the weld can be accessed in a secondary post-processing stage. The practical applications of physics-based software of this kind are in helping the end user predict optimal operating conditions fot specific laser material processing tasks. The codes are in particular intended to facilitate the design of new laser systems and the optimization of existing ones. User friendly computer codes will be produced for use by the industrial partners.
