The aim of the project is the development of quantitative phenomenological models relating the process and microstructural history of complex liquids to the structures observed in the final product. The project will combine elements of thermodynamics, contiuum mechanics and micromechanical modelling to characterise the instantaneous microstructure in a complex liquid indergoing rapid shearing or extensional deformations. The focus will be on states of dynamical equilibrium in which the preference for ordering within the fluid is balanced by the disorderiing influence of the flow field. In particular, the lengthscales and timescales associated with coherent domains or flow unit within the liquid will be assessed and related to the prediction and control of structures in the rest state. The models shal be simple and robust as possible consistent with incorporating of the necessaty microphysical processes. Small scale in house experiments will be brought in to target specific modelling issues as and when necessary, and further experimental studies to assess the quality of odel predictions will be carried out in extruders and rheological instruments. Final proving of the sufficiency of the model will be accomplished by testing predictions against data from pilot plant and practical work.
