The design and manufacture of framework structures consisting of unidirectional carbon fibre-epoxy members will be investigated. In the first year the overall concept will be analysed with reference to an aircraft outer wing box, floor beam and spaceplane fuselage, working closely with the industrial partners. Manufacture of unidirectional members will be investigated based on pre-preg processing, resin infusion and use of pultruded carbon fibre rods. Joints will be designed, manufactured and tested, starting with an end fitting and bonded K node. A simple structure will be built and tested and a full feasibility report prepared identifying the benefits of the proposed approaches.In the second year more detailed analysis will be undertaken and solutions will be developed for the specific problems involved in building the demonstration structures. Further development will be undertaken of the unidirectional members and joints required for each application, and major elements of the structures will be built and tested.In the third year and outer wing box, floor beam and section of spaceplane fuselage will be manufactured and tested, and a full assessment made in comparison with conventional approaches.
