Summary on Grant Application Form
Expertise in neural networks and music analysis - synthesis will be applied to investigate a novel means for classifying sounds. A specialised time-frequency representation of sound and feature extraction techniques will be applied to several recordings of a musical instrument. to progressively construct a musical instrument character map. As proof of concept research, this project will focus on the simpler case of musical instruments, although future applications are envisaged for modelling the human voice. Applications initially extend to expert teaching aids and multimedia, while the extended speech case could yield substantial benefits for speech therapy and intelligent hearing aids.
