Summary on Grant Application Form
To develop a novel tandem time-of-flight mass spectrometer. The instrument will incorporate CO2 laser desorption for sampling of involatile, or thermally labile target analytes directly from their host matrix or substrate, laser photoionisation of the desorbed neutrals, followed by precursor ion selection using a mass-gated linear time-of-flight analyser. Collision-induced dissociation (CID) or photo-induced dissociation (PID) will be employed to induce controllable fragmentation of mass-selected precursor ions followed by analysis of the daughter ion spectrum using a second (tandem) reflection time-of-flight analyser.
